Awakening Your True Power: Emotional Intelligence

What does True Democracy look like and feel like? It is a field that welcomes your full participation, intelligence, creativity and collaboration. You feel like you belong and can grow your potential personally, interpersonally and collectively.

And, how do we get there? The short answer is,  it’s easy and it’s challenging. In this section we will begin with the personal because it is the seed. It’s the most important component that affects everything else.

The most potent thread in this era of transition is power. In a dominant paradigm the barometer for how you’re feeling, how effective you feel or not can be measured in realms of power. When you’re feeling anxious, or afraid you feel powerless to change the circumstances. When you really want something and nothing else will satisfy that desire, you can say you’re feeling overpowered by it. If you really want to make something happen, and you do what you need to do to make it happen your way you exert your power over  it. When you’re working in a group, others are contributing their part you feel more capable together because the power is with the group. When you recognize and appreciate the contribution of another that’s empowering to them. As you observe situations, openly, receptive and clearly  you are just being with your power.

We need a purpose, a motivation for everything we do, pursue, study, engage with. Here’s mine.

Living your life from your true power is living your highest potential.

Living from your true power applies to your relationships, to your work and ultimately to the world. And, it’s the key to happiness.

Awakening your awareness of your true power begins with deepening your emotional intelligence and social intelligence. In the context of life, that means engaging with other people. That can be wonderful or terrible. It can be fertile and illuminating or frustrating and difficult.

In my work with organizations people tell me how difficult it is to work together, at times. Sometimes there’s a difficult co-worker, supervisor, or an order or a system that doesn’t make sense. They want to be more effective and efficient, and can’t. They feel helpless to change anything. Much of their time is spent putting out fires, living in emergency mode – it has to be done yesterday. They would rather maximize opportunities, have time for collaboration, to plan, to coordinate.

One CEO told me the three key issues are communication, communication, communication. She was right.

Communication has many facets, which I will talk about here on this blog. At core we’re emotional beings. We aren’t always aware of what we’re feeling, we may know we are upset, disturbed, feel “off.” We’re not yet aware or conscious of what’s disturbing us or why.

ABQ: What is your image of the ideal team or co-worker?

You may have experienced the magic already. Here’s a list of qualities  that I wish people have:

  • are a Yes, whenever you need something done or someone to talk to
  • can understand the situation, a quick study
  • are kind in their approach
  • are smart or know how to get an answer
  • got your back in a challenging or any situation

We are accustomed to Power coming from the top down, to transform human culture, power is coming from the bottom up, growing like grass, creating new roots and shoots.

When you think about POWER, what comes to mind?

win at any cost competition for power.. John Nichols

Power is a big issue right now on many levels. What does it mean to you?

How does it play out in your relationships? at work? in organizations? In our culture?

Are you feeling powerless in the face of over-powering forces  that are dominating your life personally and globally?

The power expressed in destruction, shame and fear mongering is false power and it’s epidemic in the human system.  That’s why you need to step  in to your true power, which is healing, kind and conscious. True power is your natural, authentic self, your creativity, opening your heart to yourself and others.

Living from the Inside out
